Building With Thatch

Building with thatch is something done all over the world. As one of the oldest building materials in the world, it is both traditional and easy to replenish. Many natives in the Caribbean have utilized thatch to build entire homes which, thanks to the durability of the palm thatch, continue to showcase the beauty of thatching as well as the aesthetic qualities. Thatch is a reliable insulation material which can also be used to build a roof, a thatch umbrella or even as the roof of your bamboo Tiki bar. Whatever you are using your thatch for, you will soon appreciate the value and qualities of thatching, not to mention how nice it looks.

Palm Thatch comes in a variety of sizes. Square sections of Palm Thatch either, 3' x 4' or 4' x 4'. Rolls of Palm Thatch, either 30" x 22' or 30" x 57'. Depending on the size of your roof, you wan to pick the most economical size. A good place to start is to calculate the square footage of you roof. This will give you the amount of Palm Thatch you need. It is good practice to get an additional 10%, just in case. If you have an unusual size roof, you may want to get a little more extra, to avoid having to use small pieces of Palm Thatch. Typically, it is not important to have fire retardant on the thatching, unless you are using it in a restaurant or bar. We do have Palm Thatch which is treated with fire retardant, or the solution to treat it yourself, is available commercially. We can steer you in the right direction.

As far as attaching the Palm Thatching to your roof, you have a couple options, depending on your roof set-up. You can of course staple it directly to your roof if you have a plywood roof. A couple of innovative methods we have seen over the years which makes it easy to attach and remove the Palm Thatching, is first, to use some wood lathing, 2" wide x 1/4" thick x 8' long. Place the thatching on your roof and then place the lathing over the palm thatch every foot, and then screw the lathing down using rubber gasket screws into the joists. We have also had customers put chicken wire over the palm thatch and attach the chicken wire at the outside edges of the roof. If you do not have a plywood roof and just have a open roof between joists, you do want to have some support under the thatch, at least ever 4 inches, or so. Otherwise the Palm Thatching will sag.

The Thatch Umbrella covers speak for themselves. Designed in different diameters, they fit right on top of your standard umbrella.

For long term durability, consider synthetic thatch. Synthetic thatch is more expensive, but if long term durability is an issue, it is the way to go. We will be happy to provide you with detailed instructions if  choose synthetic thatch. We have synthetic thatch umbrellas available or panels available.
