Make Your Own Tiki Bar Do you want to enjoy that tropical island getaway feeling even when you can’t go on vacation? If the answer is yes, you may want to make your own, tropically themed Tiki bar. For many people, the idea of making their own Tiki bar is something which is often considered, but never actually done. Some have no time to make a Tiki bar, others may think it is too expensive to buy the materials for a Tiki bar and some may even think it is too difficult a task to make their own Tiki Bar. Well, we are here to dispel a few myths about making your own Tiki bar and when you have finished reading, we are sure you will be ready to get that Tiki bar you always wanted and have a great place to entertain. Before you get started, take a trip to your local bar ( have a beer), and look at the basic construction of the bar. Most bars are rectangular in construction and about 42" high. You basically are going to be making a box. For the actual framing, you can use regular 2 x 4's, or cedar for construction. Do you want your tiki bar to be movable, or is it going to be stationary? Once you have your frame built, the fun starts. If expense is a factor, you can wrap the frame with Reed Fence or Bamboo Fence. Both types of fence will give you a tropical look. We have had success using full round 5/8" dia bamboo poles. Each bamboo poles has to be precut to length. Usually bamboo needs to be pre-drilled before attaching to frame, but we used a pneumatic stapler, with out the bamboo splitting. Larger diameter bamboo poles can also be used, but we would recommend splitting the bamboo before attaching. Pre-drill each pc before nailing or screwing The splitting allows the bamboo to set flush against your frame. Consider using larger diameter bamboo poles for your corners. 3 inch diameter or larger. With the bamboo poles split in half, the bamboo fits right around your corner and looks like a full round, bamboo pole. When you split bamboo, or have us do it, you will see a brittle membrane at each node. The membrane can be easily knocked out with a rubber mallet or hammer, without affecting the structural integrity of the bamboo. For the top of your tiki bar, you have a choice of many materials, wood, formica, or even stainless steel. If done right, a great looking Tiki bar can be constructed and completed in a few days. Whether you want to go for the grass hut look, the big traditional Tiki Bar design or even make something which is a little bit different, getting the right materials is crucial to your success. Only the best bamboo and other materials will help your make a Tiki Bar which will stand the test of time and be durable when the weather is not quite picture perfect. Your Tiki bar can lend your inside recreational room, your garden, or your pool side, the air of a tropical beach and is something you will be proud of. When everything is together, you will
soon be enjoying the tropical island feel in your own home. No need to
go to the Islands ( ( (wrong). The overall cost will be much less
than a pre-fabricated bar and probably sturdier. Once you have the overall structure completed, you will need to get some seating and the bar sorted out. Bamboo is a great all round material for this as it is warm, inviting, ecologically sound and will make any Tiki bar look stylish and authentic. All you need then is a well stocked bar, some tropical style clothing and it’s time to get the Tiki bar party started.
Time for a beer.
