Make Your Own Bamboo Fence

Bamboo is one of the finest building material you can ever use. It is environmentally sound, aesthetically pleasing and adds a warm and welcoming feel to any home or room. When you choose bamboo, you are making a great decision. Though many people use bamboo all around their home, one of the most popular uses is for the bamboo fence. There are many reasons to install bamboo fencing, not the least of which is that a bamboo fence gives you an easy to achieve tropical look which positively exudes style and class.

For many, the first choice of bamboo fence is the classic and timeless Yotsume-Style fence. As one of the most popular bamboo fence choice in the world, this represents a simple design which is easy to construct but hard to beat in the world of bamboo fencing. Most gardens can incorporate bamboo fencing without losing any of the charm of the garden itself. In fact, done well, bamboo fencing can enhance the look and add quite the frame to your greenery. For many, the choice of bamboo fencing is all about the space and style of the garden; with the ancient style of the Yotsume, bamboo fencing can suit just about anyone making a bamboo fence.

Building your bamboo fence is all about constructing a fence with integrity and using good bamboo. Good workmanship and high quality bamboo make for a truly stunning and long lasting bamboo fence. Linking the bamboo poles and choosing the right knots is also important. When you build the bamboo fence, ensure that the posts are the appropriate distance apart, and make the posts parallel to each other. Bamboo fencing needs to be secure so it is also good to secure with more bamboo.

Once again I wish to recommend two great books on working with bamboo, The Art and Craft of Bamboo, by Carol Stangler and Building Bamboo Fences, by Isao Yoshikawa.

A few other things for remember when building bamboo fencing:

  • Wear good gloves: bamboo fencing means splinters
  • Do not nail directly into bamboo: Pre-drill and screw or nail through the holes
  • Use a fine blade to saw the bamboo, when constructing your bamboo fence
  • Always use hardwood posts for your bamboo fencing
  • Use hemp oil or other natural preservatives to maintain the condition of your bamboo fence
  • Use dark twine known as ‘shuro nawa’ which keeps the bamboo together
