Lashing and Tying Techniques for Bamboo

Bamboo lashing and bamboo tying are two of the most important parts of constructing anything with bamboo. This wonderful material is one of the most environmentally friendly to be found and is widely used in Asia. Bamboo furniture adds elegance, comfort and an exotic feel to any room and bamboo lashing and bamboo tying is just a part of constructing a great bamboo fence. Here are some of the most pertinent things to remember as you work on your bamboo lashing and bamboo tying:

  • Start by using Poly Twine, hemp twine, burlap binding or natural raffia, to do your bamboo lashing.
  • Select the proper bamboo size and diameter for your project.
  • For outdoor projects we recommend Tonkin Bamboo, which has a higher fiber content than Taiwan Bamboo.
  • For indoor projects either Taiwan or Tonkin Bamboo can be used, but the Taiwan is a prettier bamboo.
  • Make sure, when designing your project, that the  bamboo is not on the ground, but above the ground, unless it has been treated with a hemp oil or other preservative. Bamboo will not last as long, untreated if in contact with ground.
  • Consider pre-drilling bamboo and using a thin nut and bolt, for additional stability. You can then lash and tie, over the bamboo to hide nut and bolt.

There are several tradition Japanese lashing and tying techniques including, square lashing, front crossed lashing, spiral front and back lashing, lashing with spiral, lashing with twisted spiral and the basic cross tie, to name a few. All can be used to secure bamboo poles in the fencing design, or project of your choice. For those of you interested in really learning the art of Lashing and Tying, there are two excellent reference books available online. The Art and Craft of Bamboo, by Carol Stangler and Building Bamboo Fences, by Isao Yoshikawa.
