Bamboo Habitat is
pleased to be a stocking distributor of Century Root Barrier
products. Century Root Barriers are cost effective mechanical
barriers made of recycled high density polyethylene ( HDPE ). We
have been stocking the barrier for use as rhizome barrier, for your
bamboo containment needs, but are now handling their other products
for root control also. The smooth surface of the polyethylene acts
as barrier to control the rhizome, or root growth within the desired
area. The young rhizomes and roots are very soft and are diverted by
the barrier. This allows you to plant your bamboo or trees without
concerns of roots and rhizomes growing into unwanted areas or
lifting your hardscape. Ideally used with new plantings, it can also
be used to control established bamboo groves and tree roots.
We will address bamboo containment next and then
Century Root Barrier products. For complete information on root
control, check out Centurys web-site:

Bamboo comes in many varieties, but they are either of the clumping
type or the running type. For the clumping types of bamboo, barrier may
not be needed. The running types are great for privacy fences and large
peaceful groves, but will spread if not contained. If you are fortunate
enough to have enough land and the spreading of your bamboo is no
problem, barrier is not needed. For most applications however, bamboo
is best contained within the desired area. You can then enjoy the
beauty of bamboo without worrying about it spreading into undesirable
areas (your neighbor's backyard).
Installation
of the barrier is achieved by digging a trench (renting a "Ditch Witch"
at your local equipment rental store will save you a lot of time)
around the desired area and placing the barrier within the trench. Tilt
the top of the barrier out from the center as you back fill the dirt.
This will help direct root growth up, as opposed to down. We recommend
leaving approximately 2”- 3” inches above ground,
to control any surfacing roots. At the point where your need to join
the two ends, we recommend overlapping about 4 feet and seaming in two
places within that 4 foot overlap, with our seaming tape.
Concerning
the thickness of the barrier you may need, we are recommending the
60 mil for the larger species of bamboo. We also stock the 24" x 40
mil Rhizome Barrier for lighter applications.
In regards to what height
to use, if you
have particularly loamy soil and are planting very large, aggressive
running bamboo, 30” inch high barrier should be used.
